My Les Paul studio is a 1991 model so the system of 8 letters should represent ydddynnn. This would mean that the first and fifth numbers give the year (mine being 9 & 1) , the 6th, 7th & 8th would give the number of the instrument produced that day, and where it was made (mine being 369), but what I cannot understand is why the 2nd, 3rd & 4th ....

The last four digits on the others also seemed reasonable and in keeping with the Gibson serial number page. Not sure if it holds true for your guitar, but first and fifth number indicate year: '90. 2,3 and 4th numbers indicate which day of the year your guitar was constructed: 176th. Last two numbers indicate your guitar was the ninth constructed that particular day.
