519 posts · Joined 2006. #2 · May 16, 2007. the noise is because how the gears are cut. helical cut gears are quieter and are used on forward gears. reverse whines because the gears are straight cut. straight cut gears are louder but transfer torque more efficiently. it takes more power to spin a tranny backwards than forwards..
