The game randomly picks a number from 3 to 8, and then there's a 10% chance to double that number minus 1 (which incidentally means 10, 12, and 14-floor shafts are impossible, unless you're ending on floor 100). I do some skull cavern runs for autopetters and money but mostly it's just for fun (and Qi quests).
