This isn't how video game development works. If it was 'a few months away', even 6 months away, that means they are done building it 100% and the only thing they're doing is bug testing. If they're done building it and bug testing, they have an outline of when it will release. I've done it before when adding new mods to the game for like, new towns/locations. There are a few tools around that let you delete sections of your explored world (it resets your discovered map data entirely though if you do this, but it's a minor inconvenience usually) so that it will regenerate new content when you go back to the same place.
